The latest audio missive from Maryland based solo recording artist Ghost Voice began as these things often do: an experiment. After two albums of more insular bedroom recordings mired in
hazy samples and synthesizer, Dog Thoughts began as an attempt to crack a window and let in some fresh air. The nine major compositions on Dog Thoughts were originally written with the purpose of introducing bass guitar and drums as the main foundation, but over time a variety of different instruments and textures found their way into the fold. The result is a collection of songs that celebrate renewal and wide eyed naivety, the kind that comes as a hard won victory over cynicism and malaise. The world of Dog Thoughts is a fairy tale, and on the opening title track it asks it's central question directly: "What are these things?", meaning the infinity of things that are defined by their separation from you, and therefore define you in the process. The song progresses through a collage of stylistically different sections, like the stages of a full life lived that never quite gets to the bottom of this mystery. Later, the distorted bass and restless drums of "Begin Again" chase each other in an endless circle, alluding to eternal recurrence as instruction on how to appreciate the current moment, whatever that may be.
